Dock Of The Bay. Music Documentary Film Festival 10th - 17th January 2015

The festival

It’s like going up a mountain on a bicycle. You look at it from the bottom and you don’t think you can do it. That it’s just too much. That this is for other people who are better at it. But we all meet there, in our little group, with our bikes in hand and, in the end, guided by a mixture of ignorance and enthusiasm, we set off pedalling.

We’re up to eight now. Eight winters in cinemas. Eight editions surrounded by sequences and agreements, by stories that move us. We’ve been pedalling for months without stopping: designing the posters, building stages and, above all, imagining how you’ll react in your seats. And finally the day comes along. We’ve got to the top. And this is where we join you, stretch our legs and allow our momentum to take us to unexplored places. Thank you for making us so happy. Thank you for making Dock of the Bay go on from strength to strength. Thank you for encouraging us to start off pedalling every year.

Previous editions: 2014 - 2013 - 2012 - 2011 - 2010 - 2009 - 2008

It's the year 2012. And everything's hunky-dory for the metal group Lamb of God, from Richmond, Virginia (USA). They've just recorded their new album, Resolution, and their singer Randy Blythe celebrates two years on the wagon. The first half of this new film by Sam Dunn and Scott McFadyen hones in on the band, their progress and misfortunes: how they started off as hopeless small town losers and the perilous path that led them to win Grammys and tour with Metallica. But rotten luck put pay to the original vision of this documentary and transformed it into a pure thriller. We set off around the world through their fans, now Colombia and then Jerusalem, until Randy Blythe (singer) is accused of murder, following the 2010 death of a fan in the Czech Republic, when the dude pulled a stage dive. As The Palaces Burn therein becomes an unsettling drama filled with emotion.

5 old VW camper vans. 4 bands. 3 thousand miles. 2 weeks. 1 gloriously backwards tour. The adventure starts after a fire-fuelled final night at Austin's SXSW Music Festival, where the bands (Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bear's Den) pile into their rides and head northeast. They play everywhere from bars to barns, rooms to rooftops, packing out tiny venues and wowing crowds with their unique sounds. But heavy rainstorms, multiple breakdowns, and cramped conditions remind them that to push through sometimes you need to pull together. Featuring Mumford & Sons' Ben Lovett and narrated by Gill Landry this documentary is about a modern tour, done the old fashioned way.

Patuchas, el hombre de los mil limones Asbel Esteve Obiol - 68' - Spain

Juan Antonio Canta was a multifaceted artist (a 80s-punk-rock musician, playwriter and one-man -show) whose fame arrives too late because of its more surreal song: The Dance of 40 lemons. Patuchas, The Man of A Thousand Lemons shows the hard road of an artist to reach a recognition very different to…

Director: Asbel Esteve Obiol

Original language: Spanish
Leadings: Antonio Moreno, Pabellón psiquiátrico, Juan Antonio Canta
Editors: Salva Viñets
Writer: Asbel Esteve
Producers: Guillermo Rojas
Film company: La Sinyora Films, Dos de Catorce Producciones

Sooner rather than later, the cinema had to turn its eyes to Juan Antonio Castillo, a.k.a Patauchas, a.k.a. Juan Antonio Canta. Perhaps no one represents as he does the legend of the artist drowned by success in the Spanish music context of the end of the 20th century. Only the few people who knew him well, his fellow travelers from his beginnings as a vocalist for Pabellón Psiquiátrico or his friends at RESAD are authorized to act as guides in this very dignified approach to a boundless character. And we will discover that his story isn’t so much that cliché of a toy broken by fatality or abuse, but that of a recognizable human being swallowed up by show business society. “I wanted to make music, not juice”, was how he summarized it very graphically.

Heaven Adores You Nickolas Rossi - 104' - United States

Fame requires you to wear a suit of armour, but Elliott Smith didn't pack his chest plates. Back in 1998, he declared: "I'm the wrong kind of person to be really big and famous". A year earlier he'd shot to fame for the music for Good Will Hunting, by Gus Van Sant, and four years later, he took his own life. Heaven Adores You establishes a direct connection between the film, Smith's shocking appearance at the Oscars, and his death. Show business was to blame ("It's the worst thing that could have happened to him" – his friends affirm), and this documentary isn't afraid to show the industry what its machinery can do to a sensitive soul. Through radio chats and interviews with his inner circle we see Smith's ascension to the onerous Olympus the path that propelled him there. His childhood in Dallas (Texas), his settling down in Portland (Oregon), punk city, his band phase (Heatmiser), his acoustic conversion ("he rebelled against the noise of his ex-band), his signing to Kill Rocks Stars and the growing word of mouth following the apparition of Either/Or in 1997. And the upwards (or downwards) spiral that would culminate in his tragic death. You just weren't made for the business, Elliott.

Eskorbuto, las más macabras de las vidas Kikol Grau - 50' - Spain

“Las más macabras de las vidas” [“The Most Macabre of Lives”] tells the story of Eskorbuto, the punk band from Bilbao who revolutionised music in the early eighties and have become a counter-culture legend.

Year: 2014
Country: Spain
Length: 50 min.
Original language: Spanish
Leadings: Eskorbuto

Making use, with subversive intentions, of Youtube’s vast audiovisual archive, Kikol Grau conducts an imaginary interview with the punk bank Eskorbuto, while portraying the post-Francoist Spain of the 80s. The epitome of national punk was born and grew up on the marginalized left bank of the river Nervión, in Bilbao, and through its fits of lyrics spat out to the rhythm of three guitar chords, Grau makes an incisive collage, full of causticity, using news reports, ads, “cine quinqui”, video clips and almost any type of material within his grasp. An era shaken by terrorism and the shock of the arrival of democracy (and its first disillusionments), whose only possible soundtrack is that of Eskorbuto.

Nail polish, lipstick, jewelry: nothing is too much for Dutch musical wonder Jett Rebel. He draws audiences like a bona fide star, with the talent and charisma to match. His schedule is full of TV appearances, girls stand screaming in line, and in the meantime he works energetically on writing new songs. But all this is just the outside. Jett Rebel is an alter ego dreamed up by Jelte Tuinstra and his manager – Jett dares do everything that Jelte doesn’t. His professional record company boss also joins in the contemplation of who and what exactly Jett Rebel is, what he can become and how far he can go. Although his star is rising, this candid portrait reveals that the person behind the image is still insecure. At home in his studio in the Dutch town of Soesterberg, musician Jelte Tuinstra is a shy twentysomething who has doubts about everything. Playing music and being Jett Rebel are his life raft. “When I’m performing, I'm more interesting, more self-assured. It’s just a lot cooler being him.” But when you’re still growing up and developing your personality, how can you ensure that you don’t become isolated behind a stage persona?.

We are Twisted Fucking Sister! Andrew Horn - 137' - Germany / United States

We are Twisted Fucking Sister!

Film company: Andrew Horn Filmproduktion

It’s been 40 years since the formation of the band Twisted Sister, which started out as Grand Funk of Glam and NY Dolls of Metal. If you’re wondering what that might mean, imagine boys wearing hot pants and lipstick, drinking like animals and blasting the roof off every club they played. These musicians’ recollections of their glory days are so vivid it makes you want to take a leap back in time to the early 1970s club scene in and around New York City. Twisted Sister operated in the slipstream of bands such as The Who and upcoming greats including David Bowie, wreaking havoc onstage – from a vomiting competition to out-and-out destruction. Now well into their fifties, the band members dryly reconstruct their rise, fall and resurrection. The anecdotal structure of the film parallels the music itself, with staccato sequences of recollections from the band members. The punchline of each is followed by a short cut to black and the final strike of a drum or cymbal. This infectious film immerses the viewer in the distorted reality of a group that’s very much alive and kicking, and still appearing at major festivals.

Tubular Bells: The Mike Oldfield Story Matt O'Casey - 60' - United Kingdom

Original language: English
Leadings: Mike Oldfield
Editors: Richard Fretwell
Camera: Rick Clark
Producers: Natasha Dack
Film company: Tiger Lily Films

Oldfield's life is full of highs and lows. And at the heart of it all: Tubular Bells, one of the greatest super-sellers of all time, an album recorded – no less – when its author was in pieces. This is the story of the album and its creator, and it will bestow all you wish to know. Here you'll find Oldfield's family, his adolescence, his time in the Kevin Ayers Band, his "bad acid trips", Terry Riley and the spirit of repetition. Then arrives Tubular Bells, something that still can't be put into words. Oldfield orders dozens of instruments. Upon hearing the finished master, Richard Branson, exclaims "But he doesn't sing!". It all explodes from there, but Oldfield can only mumble deliriously in interviews. In this film, we discover crucial details like the cover, the letter type and how he chose them. We see what could rocket Tubular Bells even higher sales-wise: the use of a fragment of the LP in the soundtrack to The Exorcist (1973). Oldfield tells all here, his spiritual "rebirth" and from there to his recent risorgimento in the inauguration of the 2012 Olympics.

Camera: Matt Cheney
Producers: Rhys Thomas, Jim Beach, Joss Crowley
Film company: Eagle Rock Productions

The Great Pretender centers on Freddie Mercury, singer and front man of Queen's solo journey, from 1985 until his death in 1991. The striking stuff starts where the others left off. It speaks about his non-rock interests that would go on to mark his final years: ballet, Liza Minnelli, opera... It speaks of his bonds with the other members. It speaks, of course, of the Great Rebirth: the apparition of the moustache, the discovery of gay hedonism and the NewYorkan discos. And it speaks of how Mercury rediscovered himself as a performer, showing his true colors. Extraordinary things inhabit this film: an unreleased duet with Rod Stewart, another with Michael Jackson (the relationship with Jacko fizzled when he insisted on inviting a llama to the studio); intimate declarations by Montserrat Caballé; his 1979 appearance as a ballerina for the London Royal Ballet; "Barcelona", in never-before-seen detail; and much more. Roger Taylor and Brian May's defense on TV just after his death may just be the best possible culmination in a film filled with whispers and wonders.

One can get all worked up about Spandau Ballet - as demonstrated by this excellent summary of its journey. Soul Boys Of The Western World has the one thing that's conspicuously absent from the '80s nostalgia programmes: context and vision. A documentary that oozes enthusiasm and finally returns Spandau Ballet to the podium they deserve. The band members appear one by one, telling it their way, and it's impossible not to get swept away by the anticipation and euphoria. Five working class lads from Islington, sons of the '60s, soul boys and failed punks reborn as feather-fettled new romantics. From the days of Blitz to the first #1s, from "To cut a long story short" to Spandaumanía, world tours, Live Aid, fatigue and collapse, lawsuits and a bitter ending. But the story lives on. The tortuous path of the albino guitarist. A sarcastic, southern seventy-something year old Winter – squinting beneath translucent eyebrows – leads us through his career, addiction and salvation. It's like being in a caravan with him, listening to anecdotes about his improbable survival. His arid childhood, his love of blues, his dedication and the miasma of his appetite for narcotics. Winter puked over Joplin, spent a year speaking in monosyllables, died and was resuscitated in an ice bath following an overdose, and a period passed – the 90's – in which "I wasn't really there". But Winter, bruised survivor of a bloody war, still sees the funny side of it all. This pale man will touch your heart: 70 years old, Four vodka and ice shots in a row, one daft hat, being carried to the van, big ass smile on his face. Winter died in 2014, shortly after appearing in this documentary, but Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Perry (Aerosmith), BB King and many more celebrate his tricks and his art here.

Cuchíbiri Cuchíbiri is the history of Catalan rumba according to Peret. His vision. His gospel from the beginnings to the new generations. Stories of stardom, race and family but also of his disenchantment with the music industry and abandonment. It gives us the man that took charge of his destiny with sheer determination and talent, only to later say thanks and goodbye. The documentary goes back to his early days, the Hermanos Montenegro duet that Peret formed with his cousin Pepi. From there we look at three rumberos who took different paths; Peret, Chacho and Ramonet. The first ended up selling millions of records and sharing the stage with the greats. Charo, the 'cool' rumbero that played the piano, released a healthy number of records but never reached mass success and Ramonet ended up selling clothes. Cuchíbiri Cuchíbiri probes the lesser-known facets of Peret's life; when he gave up music in order to dedicate himself to the Evangelist Church of Philadelphia, and how his godchildren convinced him to come back. From a climax to a happy ending with the next generations of the saga; the innovative funk of Lady Gipsy and the pure classicism of Miliu. And it don't stop.

Super Duper Alice Cooper Reginald Harkema, Scot McFadyen, Sam Dunn - 87' - Canada

Super Duper Alice Cooper is the story of Vincent Furnier, son of a preacher, who filled with fear the hearts of parents everywhere as Alice Cooper, the ultimate rock star of bizarreness. From his outbreak as a vocalist in a band of fanatics in Phoenix during the sixties, to the decadent haze of fame in the seventies. Super Duper Alice Cooper will strengthen the myth of Alice Cooper.

His real name is Vincent Furnier, but he's best known as Alice Cooper, the dude that was, for years, the most infamous and influential rock star on the planet. The storyline here is what you'd expect (humble beginnings, catapult to fame, descent into ruin through drugs, madness and lust and ultimate redemption), but nothing about Alice Cooper was particularly standard, nor is this review of his life. Super Duper Alice Cooper uses photographs and original footage combined with the voice of the only possible narrator – Cooper himself – to retell a rollercoaster life that went belly up in the middle. The result is addictive, intimate (come on, it's Alice Cooper).

“Cachitos de hierro y cromo” Special - Cachitos Greatest Hits

CACHITOS DE HIERRO Y CROMO unashamedly shows off the musical legacy of RTVE in the form of studio sessions. For nearly 60 years artists and others have been storming viewers’ screens. Now you can see and hear them again in this series of programmes with all-embracing themes (from song lyrics to disco music and not forgetting sex) which sets out to be educational without losing its sense of humour. The programme’s secret weapon is the TVE historical archive, the repository of the collective memory for over half a century. The sources CACHITOS draws on are incredible music shows like La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age), Plastic, Popgrama, Galas del Sábado (Saturday Galas), Los Conciertos de Radio 3 (Radio 3 Concerts), Tocata, Aplauso, Esta Noche Fiesta (Party Tonight), Zona Franca (Free Zone), Musica Sí (Yes Music) or Valerio Lazarov’s music specials (which would be enough for a whole series by themselves…). We know that despite YouTube and Spotify, there are still some surprises lurking on the shelves of the TVE archive. Over the last few months we have turned into archaeologists of images and sybarites of sound, in search of true gems of audiovisual memory, whether for musical reasons or as television events. TVE’s La 2 TV channel and Radio 3 join together once more to carry on with this successful musical formula + archive which has worked so well in the two seasons it has been showing.

Cachitos Greatest Hits will be a 50-minute film featuring the best of the two seasons in the opinion of Jero Rodríguez (director), Virginia Diaz (presenter) and Joan Pons (scriptwriter for some episodes), who will be on hand to answer questions after the film.

The Suicide Of Western Culture

“With just some toy keyboards and a bunch of second hand pedals, these two sci-fi individuals decided to create their songs from the room of a hostel for students in London, trying to reproduce sounds from those bands they admired in the 90s:Godspeed You Black Emperor, Disco Inferno, Mogwai, Flying Saucer Attack, Tortoise…an ode to the analog power”. The Suicide Of Western Culture is no longer a secretive duo. Their eponymous first album was named the best Spanish electronic music album by press, public and critics in 2010. Since then, they’ve been touring around half of the world (SXSW, FYF Festival, The Great Escape, Eurosonic, C/O Pop, Wilsonic, Popkomm, Primavera Sound, Sónar, Rockmotives, Vienna Electronic Beats, LeFest, Canadian Music Week, etc.) and supported artists such as Animal Collective, Orbital, Cut Copy, Clark, etc.

Party DJs - Doble Cuerpo DJ

Linda Mirada is a project which began with the release of a debut album “China es otra cultura” (“China is Another Culture”) on her own label “La Cooperativa” back in 2009. 2012 saw the release of her second album, “Con mi Tiempo y el Progeso” (“With My Time and Progress”), which was praised by the music press and confirms her status as one of the landmarks of synth pop in Spanish. There are constant, clear references ranging from Italo Disco to Jan Hammer’s prog rock or soundtracks by people like Tangerine Dream. However, it is also a tribute to great bands with great songs like those of Fleetwood Mac or Talking Heads. It also features contributions in the form of remixed tracks by names ranging from Nite Jewel or Phenomenal Hand Clap Band to Ruby Suns and the artist Angelino Secret Circuit. At today’s event we’ve got her making the best of a great selection of Boogie/Disco Music discs together with Kigo.

Over the last few years, DJ Kigo has carved out a place as one of the top nocturnal agitators on the Spanish scene thanks to his Desparrame parties at Nitsa in Barcelona and the activities of the Calor group, based at Siroco in Madrid. As specialist in club sounds and anything coming out of the UK, he redraws frontiers between styles in every one of his sets. His “Espanish Boogie” series of mixes has become a mass digital phenomenon and helped to revive the Spanish post-disco scene of the eighties.

Sketches and Chords. Illuminating the Donostia music scene

Organizers: Qualia, Donostia Kultura.

Diego Besné makes what we see more attractive. He retains an image in his eyes, blinks and then starts drawing. And while he does it, he never stops smiling. It’s hard to show buildings and makes them look friendly. It’s hard to draw objects and put movement into them. It’s harder to portray people. And even harder to portray people who are building nice things. In this exhibition Diego Besné has set down in his drawings a scene that looks familiar to us now, but which in a few years we’ll remember as something unrepeatable. Every time has its music in every venue. These are the components of the music scene in our city in recent years. Diego Besné has retained them, blinked and simply drawn them. And without stopping smiling, he’s managed to freeze them in simple strokes and delicate watercolours. In beautiful, unrepeatable drawings.
