Maria Callas lived her life like one of the many operatic characters she performed on stage. In the course of her career she met men who shaped her, lovers who betrayed her, directors who led her to strike out for new horizons and charlatans who swindled her. Luchino Visconti, Aristotle Onassis and Pier Paolo Pasolini take the starring roles. She lived her parts with unprecedented intensity, clashed violently with the press and fought tooth and nail to preserve her dignity. All this made her the greatest singer of the 20th century, a figure who went beyond her musical range to become the great icon of her time. Her story is one of the greatest tragedies of our time.
