The Cold War and the Wall. Decadence and uniforms. Glacial electronica and the post-punk twilight. Mark Reeder woz there and sipped on the mysterious essence of Berlin 1979-89. Catapulted from a vibrant Manchester to a nocturnal, underground, yet frenetic and revolutionary Berlin, the emigrating musician melds with this new continent: free, strange, lively and plagued by dark characters from the underworld. A tireless explorer, Reeder visits his idols (Tangerine Dream); becomes a sound engineer for Die Toten Hosen and manager of Malaria!; admires the anti-cop battle, huddles up with fellow ex-pat Nick Cave (who's about to start the Bad Seeds); bumps into Christine F. in a club. Explains whom the strange being named Blixa Bargeld from Einstürzende Neubauten is – to the English-speaking world ("an unorthodox guy, even by Berlin standards). And let's not forget, the fall of the Wall, the founding of Love Parade, "99 Red Balloons" and a visit from New Order. A marvellous history lesson.
